What is in sin?

What is in sin, that we crave it so much?

Why do we rebel against our Father's touch?

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked..."

— Jeremiah 17:9

What draws us near, though it leads us to fall—

And makes us deaf to the Spirit’s call?

"But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed."

— James 1:14

We chase its shadow, though death hides beneath,

It offers us joy, yet steals it like a thief.

"There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death."

— Proverbs 14:12

We trade our birthright for pleasure so brief,

And lose our purity, swallowed in grief.

"Like Esau, who sold his inheritance rights... for a single meal."

— Hebrews 12:16

Born with this nature, yes—but must we obey?

Can we not choose to walk a new way?

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."

— Romans 3:23

"Put off your old self... and be made new in the attitude of your minds."

— Ephesians 4:22–23

Is it worth the cost—our soul for a lie,

To live in chains and eternally die?

"The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

— Romans 6:23

Each time we give in, a piece of us fades,

Like light growing dim in a deepening shade.

"They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God..."

— Ephesians 4:18

So what is it there that we still run to—

When freedom in Christ is calling us through?

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free..."

— Galatians 5:1

"If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

— John 8:36
